Vegas SF & F Day

Steven Brust to Keynote Las Vegas Fantasy & Science Fiction Day


Las Vegas, NV – April 1, 2005 – Local fantasy author Steven Brust will deliver the keynote address at the first-ever Las Vegas Fantasy & Science Fiction Day. Sponsored by three major Las Vegas science fiction and fantasy clubs, the event will offer a day-long program of panels, speeches, and special activities designed to appeal to the city’s booming population of science fiction enthusiasts.

The first annual Las Vegas Fantasy & Science Fiction Day is the F & SF community’s salute to the Las Vegas Centennial and commemorates 50 years of Science Fiction Fandom in the Entertainment Capital. This event also will be a showcase of local authors of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

The Las Vegas Fantasy & Science Fiction Day will feature the largest roster of authors and prominent fans ever assembled for such an event in this city. Steven Brust will lead a cast of fantasy and science fiction authors that includes Brad Linaweaver, J. Kent Hastings, J. Neil Schulman, Elizabeth Bear and James Hudnall. The fan line-up includes Joyce Worley-Katz & Arnie Katz , Ross Chamberlain, and David M Gordon.

The Las Vegas Fantasy & Science Fiction Day will convene Saturday, April 30 at the Clark County Library at 1401 E. Flamingo Road located at the corner of Escondido (1 block East of Maryland Pkwy). The day's official festivities begin at 10:30 AM. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Speakers

Steven Brust has written 21 novels since the mid-1980s. Best known for the Vlad Taltos series, Brust’s works include: Cowboy Feng’s Space Bar and Grill, The Brokedown Palace and The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars. Brad Linaweaver is the award-winning author of Moon of Ice and is the co-author (with Richard Hatch) of three Battlestar Galactica novels, as part of the Battlestar Galactica 2 Series. Linaweaver has also coauthored (with J. Kent Hastings) a just-published alternative history romp Anarquia. A bibliography is available here.

J. Kent Hastings is well-known in Libertarian circles for his incisive articles, which have appeared in a wide range of publications and even been anthologized. Anarquia. his first novel, presents a panoramic view of how history might have continued if one key event in the Spanish Civil War had gone differently. A review of Anarquia can be found here.

J. Neil Schulman’s 1979 novel, Alongside won the Prometheus Award. He won a second Prometheus Award for The Rainbow Cadenza and has also written many short stories and articles. A bibliography is available here.

James Hudnall has been a prolific graphic story writer for the last 20 years. DC Comics will release his Science Fiction thriller, Aftermath in 2006. Other Hudnall creations include Espers, The Age of Heroes, The Psycho, and Chiller. A bibliography is available here.

Elizabeth Bear has built a sizeable following as a short story author and recently has had published her first full-length novel, Hammered. (Pretty good novel, as well! - dmg) More information can be found at her website.


Arnie Katz, former Associate Editor of Amazing Science Fiction and Fantastic Stories, is the co-inventor of the video game magazine and the designer of many computer and video games including Star Trek First Contact. A renowned fan for 40 years, Arnie is currently Vice President of the Fantasy Amateur Press Association and is a Past President of the Fanzine Writers of America.

Ross Chamberlain is a much-honored artist and cartoonist who has won great acclaim in the science fiction fan field for his four decades of outstanding artistry.

Joyce Worley Katz is a leading expert on Native American and Western US history who has written many articles on these and other topics. She was recently honored as one of Science Fiction Fandom’s all-time greats.

David M Gordon, although a relative newcomer to Las Vegas, has already become a popular and active fan on the local scene. His incisive reports appear regularly in Vegas Fandom Weekly.

The Sponsoring Clubs

Vegas Science Fiction Association (VSFA) is a formal group that meets twice month to discuss science fiction, fantasy, fandom and related topics. Woody Bernardi is the current President.

Southern Nevada Area Fantasy Fiction Union (SNAFFU) is the oldest continuing science fiction and fantasy club in Las Vegas. The group meets twice a month, once on the Eastside and once on the Westside, under the leadership of President Michael Bernstein.

Las Vegrants is an informal, invitational group for the area’s most prominent fans. Joyce & Arnie Katz are the founders and current hosts.
